We’re Tyler and Megan- married, 20-something, toddler-raising, dog-wrangling Missouri homeowners. We started this blog to document our trials and tribulations in house projects, DIY adventures (and misadventures), decorating, and, well, just life. First of all, thank you for being interested in us and for not clicking away due to an excessive use of commas.
Let’s take it back to 2009, when we met in our high school’s production of Little Women. This is a highly unusual circumstance for both of us. How do two utterly shy people with a knack for keeping to themselves end up in theater? God works in mysterious ways! We met, dated, went to prom, and then left for different colleges.
After half a decade of long distance, we finally moved back to our hometown. Tyler graduated with a B.S. in Computer Engineering and got a tech job. Megan graduated with a Biology/Biochemistry degree and worked as a chemist. So, at this point you might be wondering what the heck we’re doing here, on a DIY blog?
In September of 2015, we got married! A little over a year later, we bought our first home- our forever home. Well, we’re pretty sure, anyway. An 80’s flip house on the end of a cul-de-sac with a lot of space and even more trees.
As we started to dig into our flip home, we made more than a few ugh-worthy findings (exposed wiring buried in insulation, rocks (everywhere), roof leaks, sketchily retrofitted (sketch-rofitted?) gas fireplace, spiders… soooo many spiders, and more). Many times we said, “We would have never done it this way…”
Fast forward to the summer of 2017 when we found out we were expecting our first child- a baby boy! We took a little “babymoon” to Charleston, SC that totally changed our perspectives forever. After seeing (and ogling) Charleston’s beautiful historic homes (and deciding we couldn’t afford to buy one), that was it for us. We had to make our house feel the same way… all the way back in Midwest suburbia.
Not long after, our hilariously curious son was born (we’ll call him C for short). Our home dreams took a turn for the DIY, and we decided to take on projects one by one! And, based on the list above, we had plenty of material. We have always loved to work together, see progress, learn new things… Oh, and save money!!! Since then we have ripped out some giant overgrown bushes, fixed said exposed wiring, battled wasps, cleaned up a flooded basement, overhauled our son’s nursery room, planted some boxwoods (and subsequently let them float away), planted a tree (that was girdled by deer), and built a few retaining walls.
I think it goes without saying- we’re definitely not professionals and we’re even more definitely (for emphasis) going to make mistakes. But we hope you can find some inspiration, or if anything, entertainment from our posts! And truly, thanks for sticking around for our story.
